Elisabeth Sparkle: There was a little drug abuse

Plot

A fading celebrity takes a black market drug: a cell-multiplying substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of themselves. Ray Liotta starred in the film in February 2022, but died in May of that year before he could film his scenes. Dennis Quaid replaced him, but Liotta is still mentioned in the director’s “Thank You Notes” during the end credits. The toilet mirror reappears intact after being repeatedly broken during a fight sequence.

It could have been great

Special thanks in the end credits go to the many extras in the blood-soaked theater scene. Featured in the episode “The 7PM Project: September 20, 2024” (2024). Pump It Up, written by Michael Hall, Leonardo Stella, played by Earl Gregory, produced by Julien Deguines. Aging is not a bad thing.

I love cinematography

Fast shots, close-ups, suspenseful sounds and vivid colors are insane. It’s a very elegant style. Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley are great in The Substance. The story is really original in some ways.

The first part is great

At times it seems a bit like a requiem for a dreamy version (but even worse is the gory version). For example, with close-ups, the quick differentiation of the two stories and of course the gross pinpricks. But the film has enough on its own. Maybe I’ll go and watch it again and disappear in the last 20 minutes.

What was the purpose?
