Plot

Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud invites Professor CS Lewis to discuss the existence of God, Freud’s unique relationship with his daughter, and Lewis’ unconventional relationship with his best friend’s mother. Anthony Hopkins played CS Lewis 30 years before this film in the film “Dreamland” (1993). Lewis is studying the Gospels when a woman who appears to be his wife invites him to bed. The film is set in 1939, but Lewis did not marry Joy Davidman Gresham until 1956.

Freud’s final intellectual visitor in this fictional story is C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode), a 45-year-old Oxford professor and Christian apologist after he rediscovered his faith in the early 1930s.

Some interruptions are provided by flashbacks and interludes centered around Anna

The film follows a conversation between Freud and Lewis, with various key flashbacks, including Freud’s youth and Lewis’ experiences during World War I. The film also touches on Anna’s relationship with her father and Dorothy Burlingham (Jodie Balfour), Sigmund’s former patient and Anna’s close friend. The film also mentions Lewis’ conversion and his unusual relationship with Jenny Moore (Orla Brady), the mother of Lewis’s military buddy Paddy Moore (George Andrew-Clarke). In “Freud’s Last Session,” Freud and Lewis poke holes in their opponent’s ideas about God, but neither of them lands a punch.
